Riverbanks to Host Free Recycling Event

For Immediate Release: January 26, 2021

3rd Annual Wild About Recycling Set for Saturday, February 27

[Columbia, SC] — Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is once again hosting a free recycling drop-off for residents of Lexington and Richland Counties. The 3rd Annual Wild About Recycling will take place on Saturday, February 27, from 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Wild About Recycling is a community partnership between Lexington and Richland Counties, the City of Columbia, and Keep the Midlands Beautiful. A variety of items will be accepted such as electronics, paper to shred, scrap metals, tires, and used cooking oils (materials from businesses will not be accepted). Additional details are available on Riverbanks’ website or by calling 803.576.2467.

Cell phones and other mobile devices collected during the drop-off will be recycled as part of Gorillas on the Line—a global initiative aimed at reducing the demand for coltan and protecting gorilla habitats in the wild. Coltan is a mineral found in cell phones and other small electronics that is mined from areas where endangered gorillas live.

Nearly 800 cars passed through last year’s Wild About Recycling. Volunteers collected more than 62,000 lbs. of recyclables including 33,000 lbs. of electronics.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early and should remain in their vehicles at all times. Vehicles will enter the drop-off area from Greystone Boulevard and proceed down Rivermont Drive. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with traffic flow and collection of materials.
