Counselor-In-Training (CIT)
Counselor-In-Training (CIT)

The purpose of the Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is to provide instruction through practical experience and hands-on learning to acquire skills that are essential in becoming an effective camp teacher.

WHO CAN BE A CIT?
High School students who are at least 15 years old.
Students who have had prior experience working with children.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING A CIT?

Second Year or Returning CITs are eligible to present and handle education animals, including but not limited to small mammals, invertebrates, salamanders, snakes, lizards, and turtles. Animal Handling is a privilege that requires prior approval, a negative TB test, additional training hours and responsibilities.
This is a volunteer/non-paid apprenticeship program where participants learn by doing. CITs will work directly with camp counselors and Riverbanks campers, participating in behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters and other fun activities.
DATES:

Summer camp dates run from June 4 through August 10. CITs are required to attend a full day Training Orientation on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9:00am to 4:00pm, and work one full 5-week session of camp from 8:15am until 3:15pm. Every Thursday, CITs will be required to stay until 3:45pm for staff meeting and team building. A full camp week is Monday through Friday. CITs will be assigned to work either Session 1 (June 4 - July 6 with July 4th off) or Session 2 (July 9-August 10.). Please mark on your application if you are available to work either session.

**The CIT program is a highly competitive program which requires an interview, TB test, and background check. Only 6 teens are accepted per 5 week session for a total of 12 CIT's per summer.**
