Conservation & Care

Conservation is an action anyone can take to help protect the earth's animals, plants and natural resources. Much of the world's wildlife and wild places are threatened or endangered. Conservation is something we must learn to practice if we want to maintain a diverse and living earth.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is dedicated to protecting the earth's wildlife and wild places by increasing awareness and appreciation of them, providing the highest standards of care for the animal and plant collections on-site and by conducting scientific research and conservation activities that benefit both captive and wild populations. Riverbanks' staff is active in a variety of efforts supporting conservation and science, from leadership in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) to promoting sustainable practices within the organization and coordinating local, regional and global conservation efforts. A special Conservation Support Fund was established in 1996 to provide financial support necessary to accomplish the conservation efforts of Riverbanks' staff and other conservation biologists around the globe.

Enrichment encompasses a variety of activities where objects, sounds and/or scents are used to encourage the natural behaviors of animals under our care. Enrichment compels animals to interact with their environment. Enrichment comes in many forms (e.g., what an animal visualizes, smells, hears, tastes or touches).
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is one of 219 accredited institutional members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA).

From water and energy conservation to waste reduction and pollution prevention, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden implements green practices every day. Here are just some of the things we’re doing...
The hospital staff at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has been treating raptors and endangered species for over 25 years. Thanks to a donation from BB&T bank, in 1996 a medical clinic designed specifically for the treatment of injured raptors and endangered species was built. Since then, between 125 and 150 raptors have been treated per year.
What is Riverbanks' current role in the wide array of conservation efforts? From delivering high quality conservation education programs and providing superb veterinary support for SSP and research programs to administering a wide variety of regional and international conservation efforts, the Riverbanks Zoo staff is continuously and actively involved with conservation.
