Site Dedication Planned for Monday, April 23 Near Zoo Entrance
[Columbia, SC] — Landscape beautification along the Greystone Boulevard/I-126 interchange will culminate on Monday, April 23, with a site dedication and tree planting near the entrance to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
The City of Columbia’s Public Works Forestry and Beautification Division began work to transform the barren green space in early March as part of the GRO1000 beautification project funded by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scott’s Miracle-Gro Company. The once lacking landscape is now filled with a variety of palmettos, grasses, lilies and elephant ears.
"This phase in the city’s ongoing efforts to beautify Columbia’s gateways complements the work already completed by Riverbanks’ horticulture staff, which leaves a much more pleasing impression on visitors entering and leaving the Zoo from Greystone Boulevard,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
Representatives from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Scott’s Miracle-Gro Company will be among other dignitaries and special guests during the dedication planned for Monday, April 23, at 11:00am. Also, as part of the ceremony, one student who has shown exceptional ecological awareness will be recognized with the "Give Back to Gro” Youth Gardener Award.
Following the dedication, from 11:30am until 2:00pm, guests can visit interactive tables at the Zoo where kids will have an opportunity to explore various aspects of growing and gardening. Kids can watch a hands-on worm composting demonstration by Riverbanks award-winning Junior Master Gardeners, stop by the Scott’s Miracle-Gro station for a mini-greenhouse kit complete with seeds, soil and plant food, and create a seed-starting necklace with help from the National Gardening Association.
Please Note: Parking will be available for guests attending the dedication in the Carpet One parking lot located at 200 Candi Lane in Columbia. Members of the media planning to cover the event should contact Susan O’Cain at 803.603.2325 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
