For Immediate Release: April 7, 2011
Riverbanks Invites You to a Party for the Planet!
[Columbia, SC] — Please join us at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden on Saturday, April 9, for a fun-filled celebration honoring Mother Earth.
From 10:00am-3:00pm, enjoy hands-on activities encouraging you to recycle, reuse and protect the environment.
"Through enrichment and education, we hope to inspire our guests to be greener at home,” said Sue Pfaff, assistant curator of mammals at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "A few simple changes in your own backyard can have a huge impact when it comes to protecting our planet and its wildlife.”
Watch wildlife in action as baboons, elephants, lions, bears and other Riverbanks residents interact with their environment through themed enrichment exercises. Whether through sight, sound, touch, taste or smell, enrichment stimulates the animals’ senses and enhances their physical and mental well-being.
Kids of all ages are also invited to take part in interactive educational activities encouraging conservation. Guests will learn the ABC’s of composting and decomposition and have the opportunity to plant seeds to take home for use in their own gardens. Families will also enjoy other activities such as turning used plastic bags into jewelry, a Party for the Planet poster contest, tattoo station and animal bingo.
Riverbanks’ Party for the Planet will also feature, for the first time, local artist Thomas Humphries and his eye-catching creations, all made using recycled materials. It’s a definite must-see!
Each year, Riverbanks is one of more than 120 AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums hosting a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day celebration in North America. All Earth Day activities are free with paid admission to Riverbanks.
