At 7 weeks of age, the young tocos started to take food from the pan when it was held up to them. By 8 weeks of age, they were eating food without being prompted, and by 10 weeks of age, they were considered independent.

 

Even at this age, the longer bill of the male contrasts distinctly with the female's shorter, fatter bill.

Colored electrical cable tie bands have shown themselves to be suitable for softbills. All bands, however, have the potential to cripple, even when fitted properly. In fact, we fitted this band slightly too loosely. Thankfully, the error was caught before any damage could occur, otherwise the entire toe would have been lost, perhaps the entire foot.
