[Columbia, SC] - The Riverbanks Park Commission, the governing authority of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, is proud to announce Mrs. Jan Stamps as the newly elected chair. Stamps, a long-time supporter of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, has served as a member of the Commission since 2006. Prior to filling a seat on the Commission, Stamps served two terms as a board member for the Riverbanks Society. During her two-year term as chair, Stamps is responsible for guiding the Commission when making decisions regarding the improvement, maintenance, staffing and operations of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. In 1998, Stamps was elected to the Lexington School District Two Board of Trustees. She served as a trustee until 2006 and as chair from 2000 to 2002. During her time as a trustee, the District successfully passed a 50 million dollar bond referendum. In addition, Stamps is a founding member of the Brookland-Cayce High School Educational Foundation, which provides student scholarships and educational grants to teachers. She has also served on the Advisory Board of the Security Federal Bank and on several committees at Trinity United Methodist Church. Prior to taking office as Commission chair, Stamps was involved with her family’s business, Southern Anesthesia and Surgical, Inc. She also worked as an educator in Lexington District Two for 19 years. A lifelong resident of Cayce-West Columbia, Stamps holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Other Commission members taking office this year include; Mr. Earl Brown as vice chair, Mr. Phil Bartlett as secretary and Mr. Bud Tibshrany as treasurer. -### - About Riverbanks Park Commission: The Riverbanks Park Commission is the governing authority of the Riverbanks Park Special Purpose District and is responsible to the citizens of the Midlands for the financial stability of the zoo. It consists of seven members appointed for six-year terms. Two members are appointed by the Richland County Council, two by the Lexington County Council, two by the City of Columbia, and one jointly by the three entities.
