[Columbia, SC] - Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is mourning the loss of Kimya, one of the three male gorillas at the Zoo.

Kimya, the youngest gorilla at Riverbanks, was found deceased by his keepers in his off-exhibit holding area Monday morning.

At this point in time, Riverbanks does not have information on the cause of death. Kimya showed no signs of illness or stress prior to this morning’s discovery. He is being transported to the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine for a complete necropsy, to be conducted by exotic animal pathologists.

Riverbanks will share further details once they become available.

Kimya was born on January 11, 1994 at the Toledo Zoo. Kimya came to Riverbanks in July 2004 along with Chaka (25) and Mike (18) from the Philadelphia Zoo.
