Since Zoo staff was aware of the impending birth, Imi was under observation throughout the morning while she labored on exhibit and she delivered her offspring naturally. At that point, members of the senior animal staff carefully observed all interactions from the public side of the exhibit, so they would not interfere with the mother and infant bonding process.

Approximately 15 minutes later, the infant was attacked by Makale, the dominant male in the troop and the offspring’s father. After the attack, the young baboon was rushed to the veterinary hospital where several attempts were made to resuscitate him. Unfortunately, he did not survive the injuries he received from the attack.

At this time, Imi is under keeper observation and appears to be normal.

Riverbanks participates in the Hamadryas baboon species survival plan (SSP), a cooperative population management and conservation program for select species in North American zoos and aquariums that are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The breeding of Imi and Makale was recommended by the SSP.
