[Columbia, SC] - This June marks the first birthdays of the five lions that were born at Riverbanks last summer. On Saturday, June 13, Riverbanks will host a birthday party to celebrate the remarkable milestone, complete with presents of enrichment for the lions and goody bags and "cub"cakes for the first 200 visiting kids. Johari, Chuma, Jasiri-Congaree, Lina and Saied, the cubs formerly known as One, Two, Three, Four and Five, have gone through an incredible transformation over the past 12 months – starting with their names. Jasiri-Congaree (cub Three) was named last July by WIS-TV anchors Judi Gatson and Craig Melvin. Shortly thereafter, cubs One, Two and Four became Johari, Chuma and Lina – the results of an online contest hosted by Riverbanks. Lastly, cub Five’s naming rights were auctioned off at Riverbanks’ annual ZOOfari fundraiser. Cub Five became Saied (Sy-eed), named after an extraordinary gentleman and friend to Riverbanks. “It has been an amazing experience to watch the cubs grow,” said Sue Pfaff, assistant mammal curator at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “Not only for us at Riverbanks, but for the visitors as well. The community has really formed a connection with the cubs.” The first four cubs were born on June 7, 2008, to parents Brynn and Zuri. Saied was born a week later, on June 13, to parents Lindsay and Zuri. At birth the cubs weighed approximately one kilogram (or two and two-tenths pounds) each. Now the lions, all nearing 200 pounds now, are no longer considered cubs. Each has developed its own unique personality and traits. Johari is very calm and serene. Chuma is (and has always been) the largest of the cubs. Jasiri-Congaree is active and always on the go. Lina, the most playful, is a true lioness – very regal. And almost always, Saied takes the lead; he is both confident and independent. The party will start when the gates open on Saturday, June 13, with goody bags given to the first 200 children who enter the park. The cubs will receive their birthday presents on exhibit at 11am. If you cannot make the party, be sure to stop by Riverbanks soon to see how the cubs have grown. And beginning June 4, the lions will be featured on Riverbanks’ ZooView webcam.
