[Columbia, SC] - Are you a teenager that has a passion for animal care and conservation? If the answer is yes, then Riverbanks Zoo and Garden wants you to be a part of the award-winning ZooTeen program. ZooTeens, a partnership between Riverbanks Zoo and Garden and the Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands, connects area teenagers to nature and builds successful, caring members of the community and the world. “The ZooTeen program provides its participants with an opportunity to better understand and appreciate the importance of environmental and wildlife conservation,” said Heather Doggett, director of conservation education at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “By participating in real-life conservation projects at the Zoo, the ZooTeens learn how to be responsible stewards of our planet and community.” ZooTeens requires a two-year commitment, and the program runs throughout the entire year. As a ZooTeen you can expect to: - Participate in outdoor adventure and exploration
- Work closely with Zoo guests
- Become an active member in the community through outreach programs
- Build life skills
- Participate in conservation projects
- Learn about animal care and handling procedures with the Zoo’s education animal collection
- Supervise education carts during special events
- Educate Zoo visitors about wildlife
- Serve as mentors and guides for Riverbanks’ camp programs
To become a ZooTeen, you must download and complete the online application. If selected from your application, you will need to complete both a group and individual interview, attend a parent orientation and participate in a week-long teambuilding and training program. The application deadline is May 8.
