For Immediate Release: December 3, 2007 Contact: PR Department 803.779.8717x1141 [ Archived Releases ]

[Columbia, SC] - The holiday season always proves to be one of the busiest times of year, but with all of the exciting activities Riverbanks has to offer, everyone should add a visit to the Zoo to their holiday wish list.

Scuba Santa Takes to the Water
Fish deserve gifts too, and the fish at Riverbanks Zoo are eagerly awaiting their visit from Santa – Scuba Santa, that is. Christmas may be nearly a month away, but Scuba Santa is making an extra special stop at the Aquarium Reptile Complex (ARC) at Riverbanks.

Starting Thursday, December 6, and running through Monday, December 24, each day at 12:30pm, Scuba Santa will be diving in Riverbanks’ 55,000 gallon Indo-Pacific coral reef tank delivering goodies to all the fish.

If you can’t make it out to the Zoo, you can catch Scuba Santa in action on the SCE&G ZooView webcam. Visit scegzooview.com during the month of December to see a myriad of brightly colored fish, moray eels, a blue spotted stingray and Scuba Santa.

Take a Trip to the North Pole
Get in the holiday spirit with a trip to the Riverbanks Adventure Theater and take part in The Polar Express™ 4D Experience. Join a young boy on his trip to the North Pole as he discovers the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

The fourth dimension is new to Riverbanks this year. The Polar Express™ 4D Experience engages your senses with snow falling on the audience during the show and the sweet smell of hot cocoa filling the theater.

12 Days of Holiday Play
The animals at Riverbanks are in for a special treat this holiday season. Beginning December 13, join the Riverbanks animal staff for 12 days of holiday themed animal enrichment activities. Each day the staff will give a different animal gift boxes filled with treats, festive papier-mâché creations or holiday cut outs decorated with sugar-free candy.

Enrichment activities stimulate the animals’ senses and encourage their natural behavior. The physical and mental stimulation brought about by these activities help maintain and enhance the health and well being of the animals. Enrichment encounters typically draw a large crowd and provide rare photo opportunities.

To get the complete schedule of enrichment activities or for additional information on any of the holiday activities taking place at Riverbanks, visit the Riverbanks Web site or call 803.779.8717.
