[Columbia, SC] — Young explorers will connect with nature and journey to wild places when Summer Zoo Camp heats up at Riverbanks beginning Monday, June 5.

The 11-week adventure is made possible in part thanks to a $200,000 contribution from Colonial Life. The Colonial Life Discovery Center is home to the Zoo’s education division where programs and special events reach more than 200,000 school-aged children each year.

For Colonial Life President and CEO Tim Arnold, educating children on the impact of animals in our world and the significance of wildlife conservation is an important role the company plays as a strong corporate citizen.

“We believe students should become well-rounded with the skills necessary to compete in a global economy. And we try to help them through partnerships with local schools and nonprofit organizations,” Arnold said. “Our company is focused on cultivating tomorrow’s leaders and providing enriching opportunities in the local community.”

New this summer, 13-year-olds also will have an opportunity to experience the fun. Two unique topics will be offered during two one-week sessions for children ages 3 to 13. Topics according to age group include:

  • Good Night Garden and Life Around the Pond: Ages 3 and 4 (with an adult)
  • Wild Seasons and Sense-able Animals: Ages 4 and 5 (full and half day options)
  • Watery World and ZooBorns: Ages 6 and 7
  • Wildlife Trackers and Animal Architects: Ages 8 and 9
  • Poisons and Potions and Survivor: Riverbanks: Ages 10 to 13

Summer Zoo Camp will take place June 5 – August 18. Times and prices vary. Enroll before Wednesday, March 15 and receive a 15% discount off registration (discounts also apply the week of July 4) with coupon code summer2017.

Limited space also remains for Spring Break Zoo Camp. Campers, ages 5 to 9, will encounter misunderstood animals that often get a bad rap for being smelly, ugly, scary, dirty, or even loud. Spring Break Zoo Camp will take place April 10 – 14 from 9:00am – 4:00pm.

Both spring and summer camps include behind-the-scenes tours, guided zoo walks, arts, crafts, games and more. Visit Riverbanks online for additional information or to register.
