Zoo Names New Director of Education and Curator of Birds
[Columbia, SC] — Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is pleased to welcome two new additions to its senior management staff.
Elizabeth Clemens joined the Riverbanks family as director of education in July of 2012. Clemens came to the Zoo from Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center where she spent more than six years as the Aquarium’s school programs specialist. Prior to her tenure at Virginia Aquarium, Clemens taught middle school math and science for nearly eight years in the Virginia and Maryland private school systems.
Clemens earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. She also holds a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Old Dominion University in Virginia.
Also new to the Riverbanks flock is Colleen Lynch, curator of birds. Lynch, a 22-year-veteran of the zoo profession, took over the position in February following her tenure as curator of birds at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo. In addition, Lynch held the position of population biologist for the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s (AZA) Population Management Center at Lincoln Park.
Lynch is well-known in the zoo community as an active member of the AZA, serving on numerous committees and advisory groups within the organization. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Illinois Benedictine College and a Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Northern Illinois University.
