For Immediate Release: January 31, 2013

Enjoy an Early Taste of Spring and Treat Your Valentine during Orchids on the Riverbanks

[Columbia, SC] – Enjoy the year-round beauty of Riverbanks Botanical Garden while getting an early taste of spring during the annual Orchids on the Riverbanks festival planned for February 8-10.

Now in its 8th year, Riverbanks has once again partnered with the South Carolina Orchid Society and Ikebana International Chapter 182 for a stunning show that features hundreds of varieties of orchids from around the world—including a number of Japanese-style flower arrangements.

"You don’t have to be a seasoned pro to enjoy this festival,” said Andy Cabe, botanical garden director at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "The event is also great for anyone interested in learning about growing orchids as well as for those who simply enjoy their beauty.”

In addition to spectacular sights, guests can take advantage of free programs that offer expert planting advice. On Saturday, February 9, at 11:00am, Seagrove Orchids will be discussing the best practices for potting and mounting orchids, and at 1pm Carter and Holmes will host a workshop on growing orchids in the home.

Tired of roses on Valentine’s Day? Orchid vendors from across the Carolinas will be on hand offering a bouquet of ideas to the flower mix with a diverse assortment of plants for purchase. Merchants will also have growing supplies for sale.

Festival hours are Friday, February 8 from 1pm-5pm and Saturday, February 9 and Sunday, February 10 from 9am-5pm. Admission to Orchids on the Riverbanks is free with paid admission to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
