Riverbanks’ Top Tiger to Receive Clemson Alumni’s Highest Honor

For Immediate Release: March 28, 2012

[Columbia, SC] - Palmer E. "Satch” Krantz III, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, has been named one of Clemson Alumni Association’s 2012 Distinguished Service Award winners—the highest honor bestowed upon an alumni by the organization.

According to the Clemson Alumni Association, Distinguished Service Award honorees demonstrate a dedication to enhancing the value of the university for future generations; are devoted to church, community and public service; and whose personal and professional accomplishments serve as a model for present and future Clemson students.

"I am truly blessed to have been given many great opportunities throughout my life, both personally and professionally,” Krantz said. "Clemson University will always hold a special place in my heart; I feel extremely honored to be recognized by the Alumni Association in this way and very proud to be classed among such a fine group of individuals.”

A 1972 graduate of Clemson University, Krantz began his career at Riverbanks in 1973 and has served as the Zoo’s executive director since 1976, making him the longest serving zoo director in the nation. During his career, Krantz also has served as president of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has twice served as president of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He is one of only three American zoo directors to serve as both.

In addition, Krantz is a former member and past chairman of the board of directors of Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital; a former president of the Columbia Rotary Club, the Clemson University Board of Visitors and the University of South Carolina University Associates; he is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the River Alliance and the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce.

Krantz, along with the five other 2012 recipients, will be honored officially during a special gala at Clemson University’s Brooks Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, March 30.
