Assistant Coordinator of Education Programs

Duties: Under limited supervision, the Assistant Coordinator of Education Programs is responsible for the coordination, development, and instruction of a variety of programs offered by Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. Insures that all programs are participant centered and are written in accordance with national and state of South Carolina education standards, when applicable. Reports to the Children’s Garden Manager.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in an education or science related field. 2-3 years experience delivering and planning formal/informal education programs for a wide range of learners. Must have a background in both plant and animal content. Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills. Must demonstrate enthusiasm for nature and science and creativity in developing programs that will inspire enthusiasm in others. Must be available to work at special events that may be on weekends and/or evenings. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC state driver's license.

Maintenance Technician - Seasonal

Seasonal (Seasonal position through end of Nov., up to 40 hrs/week - weekend availability required)

Duties: Under general supervision, is responsible for the repair and maintenance of a variety of Riverbanks’ structures, facilities, and equipment. Performs maintenance duty assignments such as plumbing, carpentry, and electrical. May operate medium to heavy equipment such as a forklift, backhoe, skid steer, snorkel lift, trencher, etc. Participates in renovating, building, and repairing structures for the containment of zoo animals and for public use. Receives, reviews, and responds to assigned maintenance requests, projects and work orders. Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.

Requirements: High school graduate with vocational/technical training in construction technology/engineering and one to two years of experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to work independently and work well with a team on a variety of tasks and priorities. Hands-on experience in commercial electrical and/or HVAC a plus. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver's license. Must be available to work weekends and be available for emergency call in as needed.

Bird Keeper

Duties: Under general supervision, is responsible for the proper care of a taxonomically diverse collection within the Bird Department. Feeding and watering birds, cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining exhibits and some public areas, observing animals for illness, injury, and abnormal behavior.  Working with veterinary staff to monitor and treat injuries and diseases. Monitoring animal behavior and welfare.   Participate in avian capture and restraint. Participate in artificial incubation and hand-rearing. Prepare animal shipping crates and paperwork, participating in internal and external animal moves. Working with power tools to build and maintain exhibits. Maintaining detailed behavioral, reproductive, and medical records and reports. Interacting with Riverbanks guests, and speaking to the public in a variety of formal and informal educational settings.  Gaining certification for and participating as a member of the Riverbanks dive team. Conducting behavioral enrichment and operant conditioning. Providing assistance and guidance to volunteers assigned to the department.  Serving as Mentor to Bird Department Interns.  Works cooperatively with other departments including maintenance, horticulture, education, and events. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Senior Bird Keeper and the Curator of Birds.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree required (in one of the Biological Sciences), and two to three years of experience working with animals, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. SCUBA and First Aid/CPR certifications are desirable. Must possess or qualify for a valid SC driver's license.

Horticulturist - Habitat Horticulture

The Catering Operations Banquet and Event Servers report to the Catering Operations Manager and Assistant Manager. Position is part-time and include day, evening, and weekend hours. Scheduling is flexible within limits.

Compensation: Starting at $9.00. Based on Experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the highest level of customer service.
  • Maintain a friendly and approachable attitude towards guests and staff.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and mannerism.
  • Assist with set-up of tables, linens, chairs, etc, for full service of events.
  • Provide excellent food and beverage service for events.
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting 25–50 lbs, balancing, walking, and handling of delicate materials.
  • Maintain knowledge of policies and procedures.

Chef — Catering/Sous Chef
