The Birdhouse at Riverbanks features three distinctive, geographically-themed bird habitats: Penguin Coast, a habitat for rockhopper, king and gentoo penguins; Asian Trek, featuring birds such as the rhinoceros hornbill, birds of paradise and the critically endangered Bali mynah; and Savanna Camp, showcasing the birds of the arid African and South American savannas.

The Birdhouse at Riverbanks is the 2002 recipient of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) Significant Achievement Exhibit Award for the Riverbanks Avian Program.

QUICK FACTS: BALI MYNAH The Bali mynah is one of the world's rarest birds, found only on the tip of the Indonesian island of Bali. Riverbanks has been heavily involved in conservation efforts of the species for more than 20 years. View Fact Sheet CARIBBEAN FLAMINGO During spring the large flock of Caribbean flamingos housed in front of the Birdhouse at Riverbanks exhibit elaborate ritualized courtship displays. View Fact Sheet EAST AFRICAN CROWNED CRANE Courtship displays by both males and females feature elaborate dances with bowing, flaring of wings and leaping into the air. These dances are learned by young birds from their parents and are not instinctive. View Fact Sheet GENTOO PENGUIN Riverbanks Zoo has a total of nine gentoo penguins on exhibit; five females and four males. The gentoos at Riverbanks came from Seaworld Orlando by refrigerated truck. View Fact Sheet ROCKHOPPER PENGUIN Using their flipper-like wings to propel them through water, penguins engage in what can only be called underwater flying. View Fact Sheet SPECTACLED OWL The bird acquired its name from the wide broken circles of white around its yellow eyes. The juvenile, or so-called "white owl," has the adult markings in negative with a black mask and a white head.
